Spain’s Tourism Rates Set New Record, Up 5.1 Percent from Last Year

Spain welcomed a total of 22.5 million foreign tourists between January and May in 2015, representing a 5.1 percent increase from the same period last year and setting a new record, according to the Spanish Tourism Ministry.

May also marked a new high record for the number of international, long-distance visitors with 6.5 million arrivals, up 6.8 percent from May 2014.

Tourists arriving from Britain increased by 3.3 percent in the first five months of the year in comparison with a year earlier to a total of 4.9 million. They accounted for 22 percent of the total.

The British were followed by German visitors whose arrivals reached 3.6 million, increasing by 3.1 percent in comparison with the same period a year earlier and representing 16.1 percent of the total.

The number of visitors from France increased 8.2 percent between January and May to a total of 3.7 million, representing 16.4 percent of the total.

Growing tourism rates from January to May were present in every single region of the country, topped by Madrid with 11.7 percent.

Spain is the third most visited country in the world after breaking a record high in the number of international tourists in 2014 when it received 64.99 million international visitors. The country is on the path of setting a new record for tourist arrivals this year.
